A 130 kilogram centaur sculpture has been stolen from a Brunswick West artist's home, during what he believes was a targeted attack.

Tor Silver created the centaur in 2016 to take to festivals and named it "Hermator".

“The centaur sculpture is very precious to me and all I want is for it to be returned,” Mr Silver said.

“I almost feel violated and am extremely hurt. The centaur has been with me for years and has travelled several festivals with me and is very close to my heart.”

Mr Silver said the animatronic centaur was worth about $4,000 and can move at up to six kilometres per hour on a battery, which can be solar powered.

After he discovered Hermator was missing on Monday, Mr Silver immediately contacted the police.

He also took to Facebook to share the crime, in the hope it would motivate the thief to return his centaur safely.

“It feels very targeted since one would have to bring in a truck for it to be picked up, as the Hermator is very heavy,” Mr Silver said.

“It is usually placed outside my garage and you cannot see it unless you come up to my front door. Someone obviously did that, or already knew that I had one, and where it is usually kept.”

Mr Silver's bicycles were stored next to the centaur, but remained untouched.

Constable Samantha D’Agostino, from Brunswick Police Station, said an investigation was underway.

“We are making inquiries in relation to it and canvassing the area to see if there are any witnesses,” she said.
