A Melbourne teenager who egged an Australian senator has become an international sensation.

Will Connolly smashed an egg into the back of independent Senator Fraser Anning’s head during an event in Moorabbin titled Fraser Anning Speaks Out on African Gangs.

The teen was then struck twice in the face by the politician, before being placed in a headlock by one of Senator Anning’s supporters.

The unusual stoush sparked intense media interest, and has been reported around the globe.

A stranger started a crowd-funding campaign that has raised $30,000 to cover any potential legal bills incurred by the 17-year-old, dubbed Egg Boy on the internet.

The total has far exceeded the initial fundraising goal of $2000.

Sydney lawyer Adam Houda has also offered to represent Mr Connolly for free, should he decide to pursue charges against Senator Anning.

Police have not charged either party over the violent clash, which came a day after Senator Anning made controversial remarks on the Christchurch massacre, blaming the bloodshed on Muslim migration. 

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has called for Senator Anning to feel the full force of the law.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten, however, condemned Will’s actions as “a mug thing to do”.

The teenager has been hailed as a hero online, and is now the subject of many memes.

The Brighton Secondary College student’s instant notoriety has been met with a mixed response.

An online petition to remove Senator Anning from Parliament now has more than 800,000 signatures.

Executive director of Change.org, Sally Rugg, tweeted that the rush to sign had made it the fastest growing petition the organisation had seen.

On the other hand, a petition in support of  Senator Anning, titled Keep Fraser Anning in Parliament, had gathered 3650 signatures. 

Senator Anning‘s offce did not respond to a request for comment. 

He will hold a press conference in Brisbane at 9am tomorrow.
