A guide to dressing up the everyday outfit

Fashion does not always have to be complicated.

Sometimes a splash of colour on top of your black ensemble can take your average outfit from no to “woah”.

Adding a key accessory or changing the colour of your hair is another way to lift your look to something beyond the basic.

Fashion legends such as Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian are constant offenders of changing their look between seasons. Whether it be their hair, clothes or accessories, they know how to leave a lasting legacy.

This week, Streetegists at Monash Caulfield campus took a leaf out of these style queens’ little black book, and wore some bold pieces that transformed their everyday outfits.

Ada Wang did this by changing the colour of her hair, not the colour of her clothes! Her red-orange hair stood out in this look from under a dark grey beanie.

Sometimes a hairstyle change can transform your look for the better. It may be hard to wear too much colour or pattern if your hair is as light and electric as streetegist Ada’s. However, when worn with minimalist colours and textures, a colour change could be your secret weapon to standing out.

If you are worried about taking the leap to a complete hair alteration, wearing a head wrap like streetegist Roxanne can add a stylish edge to your look.

An op-shop headscarf tied in a knot was the perfect addition to her everyday uni wear. A splash of red on her head and ankles showed that this streetegist could style a basic look the right way.

We have chosen a great and affordable head wrap for you that can be worn with a minimalist outfit like Roxanne’s. Click here to check out where to get this light pink accessory for spring.

Although colour is a great way to add dimension to a plain outfit, textured pieces can be just as good.

Streetegist Elly wore a velvet black jacket over a print T-shirt, black jeans and a two-buckle belt.

Not only does a velvet jacket feel soft and nice and keeps you warm, it is also a smart way to boost your outfit if the only colour you like to wear is black.

Fashion bloggers such as Sara Donaldson from Harper and Harley love to add layers of textured black pieces. Why wouldn't you when it can be stylish, comfortable and chic?

If you are going for Elly’s look in a similar plush piece, click here this velvet jacket (right). Play it casual and wear it with a printed T-shirt and black jeans. You can also dress the jacket up with a short tight black dress, thin black choker and a pair of knee-length black boots.

Now you are ready to hit Chapel St in style.

Our love for black, whites and greys will never fade in fashion, but when worn with a hint of colour or some added texture, your outfit can conquer new trends as the seasons pass.
