Generation J: Getting your head around mental health

Generation J brings you the final of a special two-part episode about reporting on trauma. The discussion shifts from the impact on journalists reporting on trauma to how a journalist should report on suicide, mental illness, and trauma in an ethical way.

This podcast was produced by LINDSEY GREEN and KERRYN HILDEBRAND. Get in touch with us at generationj@monash.edu

GUESTS

Cait McMahon is a psychologist and the managing director of the Dart Centre Asia Pacific. In the ’80s and ’90s, McMahon was a staff councillor at The Age. She is a PhD candidate with a focus on PTSD and post-traumatic growth in journalists. She has trained journalists from Cambodia, Afghanistan, Taiwan Samoa, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, in dealing with trauma.

Mindframe’s Jenyfer Locke regularly works with journalism and public relations students to ensure suicide and mental illness is portrayed accurately. She is also a senior project officer for the Hunter Institute’s Community, Media, and Arts Program. She has previously worked in the health, and drug and alcohol sectors.

Kimina Lyall reported for The Australian for 11 years as a national reporter and foreign correspondent. She reported on events that continue to haunt the nation, including the Port Arthur massacre. But covering the Boxing Day tsunami in 2004 changed her life. Out of The Blue: Facing the Tsunami is a memoir on her experience reporting on this century’s most catastrophic natural disaster. Lyall is now Australian Unity’s group executive for corporate development after a successful 15-year career as a journalist.
