Help the world to celebrate Earth Day

Earth Day is back, tackling the global crisis of plastic pollution and Mojo have rounded up the best events around the city to get you some seriously good environmental karma.

Earth Day – tomorrow, April 22 –  has been a day of activism, civic participation and environmental awareness for 48 years, with more than 1 billion people getting involved worldwide.

This year it is all about plastic pollution, a major issue across Australia, accounting for 35 per cent of all rubbish in 2017 and making it the largest source of rubbish in Australia for the 23rd year in a row.

Yoga and meditation morning
11am-1pmKundalini House, Fitzroy North

 Health Clinic and Yoga Studio, Kundalini House, will be hosting a fundraising event with all proceeds going towards the Earth Day Network. The workshop involves discussing the impacts of plastic pollution on the environment and human health and what actions can be taken for change. This will be followed by yoga and meditation practices to deepen individual’s connection with the Earth.

The class is donation-based, you can book on their website.

End plastic pollution walk
10am-12pm, Pipemakers Park, Maribyrnong River

The Australasian Nature and Forest Therapy Alliance  will be hosting a walk along the Maribyrnong River and collecting plastic rubbish along the way. The alliance is using the event to bring awareness to the prevalence of plastic in the environment. The walk is open to everyone, just head along with garbage bag and gloves in tow ready to get involved.

Break the radio silence
1-2pm, O'Donnell Gardens, St Kilda

Friends of the Earth Melbourne are hosting a community picnic aiming to mobilise the community and bring awareness to Australia’s increasing carbon emissions. The event sets out to send a message to state and Federal government to invest more in renewable energy and transition away from coal. The picnic will be followed by banner photo outside Luna Park, this free event is open to everyone.

Left Bank
12-5pm, Left Bank Melbourne, Southbank

Super lux Yarra-side bar and restaurant Left Bank is celebrating Earth Day with a special vegetarian menu. Featuring meat-free choices such as sweet potato gnocchi and cauliflower steak, the menu will be made with local ingredients and customers will even be rewarded for their dining with a plant to take home. With dishes starting at $20, this may be an Earth Day alternative for those with a bit more cash to splash.
