Keeping up with Kylie

By ANGELINA,
the Hype Hunter

Breaking the Internet has become a hobby for the Kardashian-Jenner clan. This time it was Kylie Jenner's turn.

Her highly coveted Lip Kits  sold out within 30 seconds of becoming available, in the process crashing her website and Google Analytics.

With their constantly “sold out” status we began to wonder if these Lip Kits were make-up unicorns. Do they actually exist?

It took four months from the launch date to finally get our hands (or lips) on a “Candy K” Lip Kit. Was it worth the wait? Here’s the verdict.

THE LIQUID LIPSTICK

You have to give Kylie credit for the liquid lipstick, the pigmentation is absolutely beautiful. It took only 10 seconds to dry into a 100 per cent matte finish.

In order to achieve the famous matte look of Kylie’s lips, common lipstick formulas usually appear like thick whipped mousse.

The formulation for the liquid lipstick is very thin and yet pigmented. You can do your entire lips in just one swipe.

It also delivers its promise – long-lasting wear. Once it dries, you can eat, drink, kiss, even shower in it without worrying about touch-ups.

You have to literally scrub your lips with make-up remover to remove it completely.

However, the lipstick has a very strong vanilla cupcake smell. Keep this in mind if you have a sensitive nose.

THE LIP LINER

It was a pleasant surprise to find that the liner glides on smooth as butter. It does so without exaggerating dry patches or lip lines.

Because of its soft formula, it fades faster than the liquid lipstick. However worn on its own it is more moisturising than the lipstick.

WORTH THE HYPE?

As great as the initial excitement was, the Lip Kits come not without complaints.

The most common critique is the liquid lipsticks are drying. True enough, two hours after application, my lips are flaking and looking brittle.

While not Kylie Jenner, with the luxury of having your own makeup artists for touch ups, you constantly face the same problem with matte lipsticks.

They look amazing for the first few hours, until your lips start feeling and looking as dry as the Sahara Desert.

The price is ridiculous. A Lip Kit retails for US$29 plus US$14.95 for international shipping. Don’t even think about eBay. One Kylie Lip Kit can go as high as $159.

Is it worth the hype? Honestly, no.

There are many great matte liquid lipsticks out there that are half the price and more accessible. You can find equivalent colour and texture online by simply doing some hunting of your own.
