Local designer has sights set on international success

Local young designers are finding international success is not just a passing trend.

Labels such as I.AM.GIA and FME Apparel have led the way for Melbourne designers to have their items of clothing on the backs of some of Hollywood’s most influential stars.

Meg Parry, of Meg Parry Studio, launched her debut collection this year and hopes to follow the success of local exports before her.

The 25-year-old designer describes the women who wear her clothing as “style conscious women who seek well-made, beautiful and comfortable clothes with interesting details and functionality”.

After receiving industry experience under Akira Isogawa, Gareth Pugh Studios and tutoring  at the London College of Fashion, Parry wanted to create “thoughtful contemporary designed clothing for the everyday modern woman”.

All clothing is made to order in Parry’s Oakleigh studio with the label aiming to produce highly sustainable and environmentally conscious fashion by reducing waste.

Parry said she was continually “exploring more ways [she] can produce sustainable garments, particularly within fabrication”.

Social media platforms, such as Instagram, are rapidly making it easier for her label to gain recognition and “gain a wider support network”, she said. “It helps me consider where I fit in the market, particularly of local Melbourne designers.”

Developed through the social media collaborative environment, Meg Parry Studio recently announced that they would be featured on Alice is Back, a hub which supports and stocks independent designers worldwide.

Parry is excited for the future of Meg Parry Studios, saying it will involve “collaborations with other creatives locally and internationally” and working with “creative teams to produce fun editorials for media content”.

“Before I know it, it’ll be time to release season two!”
