Monash athlete 'raring to go' for world championship triathlon

Monash student Noah Deubel says he is “raring to go” as he prepares to join more than 5000 of the world’s best elite and age group triathletes on the Gold Coast in September.

The anxiety he felt six months ago was gone, he said, and he was "quite ready" for the 2018 ITU World Championship grand final, which starts on September 12 on the Gold Coast.

“I just have to keep a lid on it for a few more weeks before I can unleash,” the fourth-year bio-medicine and commerce student said.

Deubel, who is self-coached, has been training for the past two years.

“Most days, I have two sessions at least," he said. These include a swim, ride and run at least three times each per week, and at least two gym sessions.

“I try and train in blocks, pile on that fatigue, recover, and then try be faster the next training block.

“I haven’t had any serious injuries for over a year, but I rarely go more than a month without some little niggle that I have to sort out. But nothing major.”

Deubel started triathlons four years ago and pursued the sport quite seriously until he was faced with a choice.

“I had to decide whether to try and become a pro or to study. I tried to do both, but it was too hard. Pro-life is out of home for nine months of the year," he said.

“I didn’t want to get out of the sport, that’s why I chose to try and prepare for these world champs.

“[Gold Coast] became bit of a target. It was always what everything was building towards.”

Assuming all goes to plan, Deubel is in for a good race.

“Triathlon’s strength is also its weakness. There are so many different aspects of it – all it takes is for one thing to go wrong and the race can be done," he said.

“If everything goes well, it should be a good race. I’m hoping for a top result.”

Deubel will compete in the 20-24 age category in the sprint distance triathlon.
