Streetegists – meet this week's masters

CORINNA LAGERBERG and STEPHANIE CHEN catch people starting to cover up as autumn brings chills to Monash’s Caulfield campus.

STREETEGISTS  [street-i-jists] = Experts in street style

 BOHEMIAN PRINCESS

Once upon a time, in a land quite near, there lived a Bohemian Princess. She wore earthy colours of orange and cream and breathed life into her vintage-inspired suede brogues. She was influenced by styles of the world and her painted wooden earrings gave her outfit an exotic flair. Details mattered to her, right down to her collection of silver rings. She dressed in bright colours which gave off an air of frivolity and joy. Just like a fairy tale, this outfit has an enduring appeal.

PRETTY IN PONCHOS

The poncho is an autumn and winter essential this year. It’s cosy, versatile and perfect for layering. You simply can’t go past what some have approvingly dubbed "the blanket". We think this look is fabulous. It’s chic, bohemian and retro all at once. For the typical uni student, it is a struggle to get out of bed in the morning. Struggle no more; the poncho allows you to make a fashion statement you can snuggle into.

PUT ON YOUR THINKING CAP

We are such fans on the originality of this outfit. It’s always great to see someone distinctive, innovative and who clearly thinks outside of the box when they get dressed every morning. Some crowd favourites: the round-framed sunglasses, the collarless shirt and the earflap hat. There is something so one-off about this outfit that would draw the eye of any passerby. The unique style of John Lennon is definitely being channelled in this outfit and it is legendary.

ODE TO SIMPLICITY

We love the minimalism of this look. It definitely gives off the effortless cool guy vibe with a slight soft grunge. Bag slouched on one shoulder, trousers slightly rolled, matching black shoes and socks all work together to create an individual, simple style. Rather than wearing a plain white T-shirt, the Universal Studios tee adds that element of personality to make this outfit the perfect combination of understated originality.

SCARFSPIRATION?

We would like to set one thing straight – scarves are much more than a winter accessory. Let’s be honest, they have to be one of the easiest accessories out there. They are the perfect option for adding a little extra warmth to your outfit when the weather won’t allow for a jacket. When it’s too warm simply tie it around the handle of your bag to give it some extra personality. Tie it, wrap it or just throw it on, a scarf will add that little something extra to any outfit. It really is the chameleon of every girl's wardrobe.

BLACK IS THE NEW BLACK

It is a well-known fact that Melbournians love black. It is always in style and practically impossible to get wrong. Here in Melbourne we have an ongoing love affair with dark fashion – pieces in grey, navy and black are staples of every girls’ wardrobe. So what is it about black that we find so alluring? We think it radiates elegance and confidence. It emits a sense of poise which is difficult to achieve with other colours. There is something so Parisian about this look which makes us feel like we are taking a stroll down the Champs-Élysées. Le noir is timeless, and this streetegist has adorned it perfectly.
