Takin’ it back to the old school

Fashion trends have a tendency to repeat themselves.

Think about the puffy sleeves of the '80s. Through the early 2000s tweens laughed at their mothers' high school photos, filled to the brim with geometrically shaped jackets and jumpers, armoured with military shoulder pads.

Fast forward 10 years and similar shoulder pads were being worn by fashion icons such as Rihanna and Lady Gaga.

This week on campus, we are seeing the revival of the '90s. Heroin-chic style has made a comeback, leaving the rest of us drooling after our well-dressed peers who are "all that and a bag of chips" (which is '90s slang to describe people who are already everything, plus extra).

Our Monash Streetegists were ready for time travel and dressed to play a part in the The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, rocking baggy jeans, crop tops, long socks and denim duos.

Three-quarter denim jeans were the "it" thing, as evidenced by streetegists Emily and Gabriella, who showed off their winter warmers by bringing back high-waisted ankle freezers.

Good denim jeans can be hard to come by, but the mum jeans trend makes it a little bit easier thanks to its loose fit and chill vibes. Ericdress has a simple option for those who might be too scared to wear pure denim but want the look and ease of something that goes with everything.

And even though high-waisted jeans in the '90s were definitely part of the "411" and were "like totally wicked", it would be wrong to forget the mini-skirt craze.

The combination of a short plaid skirt, black stockings and some killer Doc Martins would generate swooning from anyone who lived through the '90s, but they won’t have to reminisce anymore.

You only have to take a walk through Monash’s Caulfield Campus to see a modern rendition of the killer outfit, as modelled by our streetegist, Kate.

Her short suede skirt paired with opaque stockings and work boots make for a convincing '90s flashback.

Another major look resurrection in 2016 is the T-shirt-over-the-dress combination.

Kim Kardashian showed us how to look like a modern version of Kate Moss, wearing a The Life of Pablo oversized T-shirt with a silk slip over the top.

Streetegist Keeley took a similar approach to her outfit this week, layering a Alice In The Eve black halter dress over a Kookai light grey long-sleeve.

If you want the same comfort and relaxed look Keeley has, then ASOS has the perfect black satin slip dress at a do-able university student price.

So take note fellow students, don’t be afraid to steal your brother's or boyfriend's T-shirt and pair it with your little black dress because, as we saw, it’s possible to look great when doing it.

And although we’re already high on nostalgia, let’s take one final look at the love our streetegists had for denim.

Tantoo wore a dark denim jumpsuit from The Fifth Label with a classic '90s accessory, the retro black elastic choker.

Monash streetegist Kavisha took her love of denim to another level, wearing matching denim shirt and skinny jeans. If you want to wear denim ensembles, we won’t judge you cause as you can see, it’s totally cute.

Explore your '90s fashion this spring and summer and get creative. Remember, grunge is the new cool.
