A victory for Manchester City in the local derby against arch-rivals Manchester United pretty much gave them control of their own destiny in terms of the Premier League title race.

If they go on to win their weekend fixture against Burnley, City will be a point clear of Liverpool. They simply have to win all their games in order to become the first team since Manchester United in 2008/09 to retain the Premier League crown.

The only way Liverpool have a shot at winning the league is if Manchester City manage to drop points in their remaining three fixtures and the Reds manage to better their result.

The title race is by no means done and dusted and Liverpool winning the title would not shock many considering the level at which Jürgen Klopp’s men have played. With their impressive 5-0 win over Huddersfield on Friday night, the title race will most likely go down to the wire.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at the final fixtures for both sides.

Manchester City

Burnley (A):  

Manchester City will travel to Turf Moor on Sunday in the aftermath of their dominating win over United at Old Trafford. 

While not what they once were, Burnley are still one of the better defensive teams in the Premier League. The Clarets have been known for their hardworking displays over the seasons and, having reached the magical 40-point mark with a draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, Sean Dyche’s side will be rearing to go have a go at City.

Leicester City (H):  

Leicester City travel to Etihad the following Monday night in what will be Manchester City's final home game of the season.

Brendan Rodgers, a former Liverpool manager himself, should have extra motivation for this game as the Foxes will look to produce something of a rear-guard action against the talented Manchester City team.

The Midlands team have found some form recently with striker Jamie Vardy back among the goals, and this will cause the Citizens plenty of problems. 

Brighton & Hove Albion (A):

A trip to the Amex stadium on the final day of the season could be a possible banana skin for City as they will go up against a Brighton team that could be in serious relegation trouble.

The Seagulls are just three points above the drop zone with three games left and could be fighting for their lives. 

A dangerous team on the counter, Brighton’s desperation to win, or even manage to squeeze out a point should results not go their way, could play a huge part in deciding whether the title ends up in Manchester or Merseyside.

Liverpool

Newcastle United (A):

Rafa Benitez and a plucky Newcastle side, will be Liverpool's penultimate fixture in the Premier League.

Benitez, another former Liverpool manager, would love to hand his former team the title. However, with his position at the club in some doubt after a chat with owner Mike Ashley, Liverpool should expect a plucky Newcastle side that could be hard to put away.

In addition, with Messi and Barcelona travelling to Anfield over the week for their Champions League semi-final showdown, Liverpool could be caught in two minds at Tyneside.

Wolverhampton Wanderers (H):

 For the last game of the season, Wolves visit Anfield with their own European ambitions on the line.

Wolves, who have been the surprise package of the season under manager Nuno Espirito Santo, are currently involved in a fierce battle for the seventh and final European spot in the table with the likes of Everton and Watford.

That and their amazing record against the top six throughout the season should be cause for concern for a Liverpool team that cannot afford to slip up. Just like City, expect this game to be a potential banana skin for the Reds.
