Style Staples: Exercise tights

Vogue UK writer Hannah Coates described the importance of choosing the right activewear for exercise earlier this year. Basically, tights can make or break your workout.

“If there’s one way to ensure you keep up your exercise regime, a selection of good workout wear that will help spur both your mind and body into action is it.”

The best exercise tights are extremely difficult to find. Will you choose Nike, P.E Nation or Lululemon? The options are seemingly endless and often overwhelming. Tights that pinch your thighs whilst squatting, or bag around the crotch whilst running, are not quite what you are after.

These six women shared their favourite exercise tights, after years of experimenting with different styles and brands.

Pilates instructor Christina Traychevska’s favourite tights are the Lululemon Align tights.

“The fabric is beyond soft, and the fit is perfect for literally every body, the tights kind of mould to the skin, so particularly for me because I have wider hips and a smaller waist they’re great,” Ms Traychevska said.

“Being a multidisciplinary movement teacher, my tights need to lend themselves to any kind of activity, and aligns tend to feel even better as you sweat more and move so well with your body.

“The only downside is the fabric is designed for very low impact movement, so if you wear them everyday like I do, then you’ll find yourself having to replace them every 5-6 months from all the pilling that happens to the brushed fabric. But it’s 100 per cent worth it.”

Fitness Instagram influencer Amy Lyon prefers her Gymshark 7/8 leggings

“I am really short and a big thing I struggle with is finding tights that not only fit properly but ones I do not have to roll at the bottom,” Ms Lyon said.

“These are the perfect length and the fabric is extremely comfortable, the most comfortable activewear tights I own.

“They are perfect for strength or weights training, out of all the different styles of workouts I do, as they aren’t extremely high-waisted so [they] don’t pinch when doing exercises such as squats and lunges.”

Melbourne United cheerleader Anisa Mahama said her favourite tights are from Cotton On.

“These are definitely my favourite tights. I’ve had them for about six months I would say, and they’re probably my go-to if I just want to feel comfy,” Ms Mahama said.

“They just fit so well. Not too tight, but not too loose, yet at the same time I feel like they’re pretty breathable.”

Avid fitness enthusiast Jessie Quirk said her Jaggad leggings are her favourite.

“I love them because they fit so nicely and they don’t dig in anywhere,” Ms Quirk said.

“I also really like the patterns and colours they come in.”

“They’re really great for high-intensity and will stay up the whole workout,” she said.

Yoga instructor Cecily Chun is a big fan of Alo Yoga leggings

“I have to say I am a lover of all of Alo Yoga’s leggings and I live in them all day, everyday,” Ms Chun said.

“I love them because they are high waisted and the waistband doesn’t roll down.”

“The fabric is quite thick, giving you that ‘held in’ feeling, plus they have the most beautiful range of colours and styles,” she said.

Student and fitness enthusiast Jorja Mack recommends the Lululemon Align tights, like Ms Traychevska.

“The reason I love the [Lululemon] Aligns is because they feel like butter and are simply the most comfortable leggings I’ve ever tried,” she said.

“Even if I put them on planning to exercise and sit on my ass all day, it still feels like I’m wearing something as comfy as trackies.”
