Man charged over fatal hit-run of Monash student

A man will face court today after he was charged over a fatal hit-run that last week killed Monash University student Nisali Perera.

Shane Cochrane, 37, was last night remanded in custody after being charged with five offences.

They are: culpable driving, dangerous driving causing death, fail to stop after fatal collision, fail to render assistance after fatal collision and drive whilst disqualified.

Police have revealed Ms Perera had almost made it safely across Wellington Road when she was struck by a car they allege sped through a red light around 9.45pm Thursday, August 29.

Cochrane's co-accused Lauren Hindes, 33, was bailed yesterday after she was charged with allegedly assisting Cochrane stay on the run for five days after the fatal collision.

Police allege the pair abandoned the badly damaged car nearby shortly after the collision.

They were arrested on Tuesday after police located them at a property in Officer.

A memorial for Nisali will be held at Monash University's Clayton campus’ religious centre today from 3:30pm.

All staff and students have been invited to attend and pay tribute to the Bachelor of Commerce and Business student, who had travelled from Sri Lanka to study in Australia.
