Ed Sheeran's new album is already the year's biggest seller, in just its second week on sale.

The third album from English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran sees him return to the music scene with a strong and exhilarating collection of tunes.

In ÷ (Divide), which continues his tradition of naming albums after mathematical signs, Sheeran is more in touch with contemporary sounds, picking up some new musical influences along the way.

Opening track Eraser is a bold statement full of unapologetic and brutally honest lyrics where his unique rap skills make a welcome return. It’s a reflective and defiant moment that sets the perfect tone for an album all about being authentic and genuine.

Sheeran takes a particular liking to Latin vibes in the second lead single Shape of You and deluxe track Barcelona.

They both have a fun, danceable and carefree energy that grows on you with multiple listens, thanks to their instrumental riffs and melodies.

Proving he really is a jack-of-all-trades, Sheeran also draws on some heavy Irish folk influences from Galway Girl and Nancy Mulligan, with the distinctive fiddle line on the former that adds a light-hearted edge to the song.

In a sweet gesture, Nancy Mulligan draws lyrical inspiration from how Sheeran’s grandparents fell in love. It incorporates a lively flute line, a spirited acoustic guitar and percussive clapping to create a unique listening experience reminiscent of an old Irish tavern on a Saturday night.

Sheeran’s lyrical prowess shines through once again, as he takes us to new places with vivid stories. They are relatable experiences communicated through simple wordplay and accessible social references that modern listeners can easily understand.

The romantics are more than catered for with the sweet sentiments of Perfect and How Would You Feel (Paean), while Sheeran is at his heartbreaking best with his vocal delivery of the achingly beautiful Happier.

What Do I Know is a positive and uplifting guitar driven track that has an effortless groove, underpinned by an inspiring message about making the world a better place through music and love.

But it can’t get anymore genuine than the lead single Castle On The Hill. Its warm, feel-good vibe is reminiscent of a U2 rock classic with the energetic electric guitar and drum lines. The hearty lyrics will leave you feeling nostalgic for your childhood.

Supermarket Flowers, a raw tribute to his late grandmother, and the self-reflective Save Myself are also notable standouts that showcase Sheeran’s capacity to tell a story through music.

Although he employs a litany of different styles in his latest creation, there is no doubting the flexibility of Sheeran’s musical identity. Whether it’s a throwback track that revives Irish folk for modern listeners or a summery pop song, he has an astonishing ability to make each piece of music he creates his own.

With stylistic depth and complex lyrical narratives, is some of his best work yet and shows that Ed Sheeran is not afraid to keep breaking down modern musical barriers.
