Check it out: here's a clear pattern of looking fabulous on campus
It's transition time, and sparks of spring are peeking in, with still a healthy respect for a chilly wind. CORINNA LAGERBERG and STEPHANIE CHEN searched campus and found checks, stripes, suede and cuddly warmth all sharing the spotlight.
Streetegists – our experts in street style
Checkmate
Checks are one of the standout trends this spring. We don’t think this pattern could be any sweeter with its '50s and '60s retro appeal. Checks can be both soft and classic, while still capable of being paired with a leather jacket and a Vespa. This pattern couldn’t be less reminiscent of a school dress, with its sophisticated and adult appeal. As this streetegist has shown, it is the absolute crux of looks: feminine, rebellious, youthful and refined all at once. We implore you to check it out!
Earn your stripes
Nothing is impossible with this streetegist’s outfit. We love the sporty minimalism of this ensemble, particularly its pared-down approach to athletic influences. A stripe here and shoelace there is what gives this streetegist an air of sports luxe. We adore the idea of sports fashion that doesn’t involve a gym membership. Sweat or style? You decide! Then again, who says you can’t have both?
Shirtfront
This shirt and V-neck jumper combination is the perfect way to finish off any outfit. The pairing is an oldie but a goodie, and we won’t argue with its yearly spring revival. The cotton shirt is a go-to spring and summer staple that we will be seeing a lot more of around campus in the days to come. This streetegist has dressed a classic wardrobe staple up with a college frat feel. It’s oh so posh. Thankfully, he hasn’t popped the collar.
Cardi-can
Expect to see a new knitwear star in the coming weeks, with the return of the cardigan. These are hardly the marks of librarians and teachers, and we think they are the perfect transitional piece as we head into warmer months. As this streetegist shows, a cardigan doesn’t have to be boring. There is ample opportunity to experiment with different colours, patterns, fits and fabrics. Worst comes to worst, you end up looking like Britney Spears in her Oops … I Did It Again music clip, but is that really such a bad thing?
Suede with me
Street style crowds are loving suede looks this spring. From brown fringe suede jackets in the '70s, modern designers are using this fabric to take on pieces ranging from mini skirts to backless tops. This hippie revival is definitely taking to the streets. Our streetegist has taken the trend on with a pair of black suede drop-crotch trousers, which we absolutely love. Walk on, streetegist!
