How it's done: Fashion grad's knockout runway display

Emerging Australian designer Sofie Teh is certainly one to keep an eye on for any lovers of bright and whimsical fashion. Her bold hand-made textiles are a vibrant explosion of creativity and energy. Three words to describe her collection: fresh, tactile and luxe.

CORINNA LAGERBERG sat down with Teh after her appearance in the graduate showcase at the Virgin Australian Melbourne Fashion festival last week and asked her a few questions about her experiences in the industry so far.

What was the inspiration behind your collection? My collection was based on the colourful history and culture of Vietnam, particularly focusing on the interesting clash of cultures reflective of its past. The adoration of traditional textile making techniques was also important in making reference to the Hmong tribes of the highlands in SaPa.

What’s something people don’t know about designing a collection? It is an incredibly personal and emotionally involved process.  The practical work is full on, but it's the focus and mental side that make it truly intense. The collection became completely personal to me and it would send me through about 100 different emotions and frames of mind every day. Your whole way of thinking becomes about your work, but that's what happens when I am 100 per cent passionate about it.

What has been the most exciting career milestone for you so far? The most exciting milestone has been making custom pieces for people who really love my designs. Recently I have been making hand-painted headscarves and pompom headpieces for some really inspirational chemotherapy warriors from around the world including England and Canada.

What has it been like showing your collection at the Melbourne Fashion Festival?

Being a part of the VAMFF National Graduate Showcase was out-of-this-world amazing. It was a stand-out opportunity to showcase my passion and work with such a vibrant team of professionals. I’m still recovering from all the excitement and elation.

What’s your advice for young and budding fashion designers?

My advice is don't hold back. If you love the idea of something, don't be afraid to go for it and go all out. Be brave and bold, and you'll create wonders that show your passion.
