Simply Beings: Hearing Loss

When someone lives with a disability, society sometimes struggles to see the individual beyond that. Simply Beings is a podcast that shows people as more than their disadvantages and explores the hardships they face because of societal perceptions.

In episode two, Sheetal Singh discovers how a split-second slip on some stairs led to a lifetime of adjusting to a cochlear implant for Wollongong TAFE teacher and filmmaker Nathan Burling.

That life-changing moment caused Nathan to lose all hearing in his left ear. He's now working on a documentary to spread awareness about cochlear implants.

Sheetal also speaks with audiology experts about the social isolation that can come with hearing loss and its mysterious connection to dementia.
