Scarred: when corrective plastic surgery uncovers a genetic truth

As a child, Monash University student Genevieve Thorpe underwent surgery to correct a minor deformity of her ear.

However, rather than mend an insecurity, months after the surgery another began to arise when she noticed excessive scar tissue forming on her ears.

It's known as keloid scarring.

Genevieve talks with Monash Professor Geoffrey Sussman to discover why some people's wounds don't heal in the same way, and reflects with her mother and a fellow keloid sufferer on the genetic condition.
